Overland China Mall.

A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS. IN ONE.

A diphtheria scourge which is at present prevailing all over the Colony, covering an extensive area, is causing great concern for the medical officers. Most of the cases are European, and there are now over seventy confined to bed. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. G. W. Pope) when inter- viewed by a China Mafi reporter on December 28, reported that the number of case was abnormal, but there was really nothing to create a panic As to preventive measures, Dr. Pope said that the public should be very careful with their foodstuffs, and another important point was to keep away' from 'crowds. Owing to the epidemic many festive functions have been cancelled - and wisely, too. The full story of the scourge is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

Christmas was ushered in its customary way, there being many enjoyable dances and Christmas Tree parties held. But the follity was hot without its measure of excite- ment, for during a kiddles' party at 287, The Peak, a clue......... matograph display was being given to the children, -when one of the films in the machine took fire, apparently due to overheating. The operator of the machine received slight burns, whilst in the pandemonium that followed one of the party, Mrs. Stearns, accidentally thrust her right hand through a pane of glass, jin her hurry to open a window. The outbreak is chronicled in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

*

The formal opening of the new Civil Service Cricket Club pavilion was performed by Lady Peel on December 26.- Mr. A. E. Wood, acting President of the Club, gave a survey of the Club's history since 1902. The Club-house is an imposing concrete structure, built in modern design at a cost of $20,000.. A full report is published in the OVERLAND CHINA. MAIL.

There is no phase of the life of the Colony or of China that does not receive attention in the OVErland chinA MAIL the weekly paper that YOU MUST ORDER NOW.
