On behalf of the members of the Hong Kong St. Andrew's So- ciety I have the honour to bid all our guests a hearty welcome here to-night and I am pleased that your Excellency and Lady Peel are once more in our midst.

St. Andrew's Day to the un- sympathetic, is the day on which Scotsmen are alleged to sing their own praises. That, however, is not the object of our gathering here now. We meet together only to give vent to our feelings of affection for the country of our birth and of pride in its history.
