THE NAVY'S FUEL.
Even if there are many who will not go the whole hog and believe that the Navy ought to go back from oil fuel to coal, there is nobody who does not see the disadvantage of having to get its fuel supplies from over- seas. Therefore great hopes were placed on the experiments for distilling oil from coal, and many have seen in them a possi- ble way out of the difficulty. The Navy therefore took a trial con- signment of this oil, and there is great. disappointment at the an-

nouncement by the First Lord that ita technical use was not nearly as encouraging
as had been expected. It proved to be only usable in that way when it was mixed with a very much larger bulk of petroleum oil, and although, providing its present price can be cut down to one- fourth in order to bring it to the level of imported supplies, it should be exceedingly useful for cking out the oil reserves, its complete use must depend upon a complete change in its present character by improved distilling methods.
