This situation, unprecedented in theatrical history, has lately been accentuated by the fact that Ameri- can companies are now making films here on an increasing scale, and are bidding against British companies| for the services of players available. The players have not been slow to seize their opportunity. One con- of them, chiefly siderable group those most experienced in film work, have formed a kind of "ring," the object of which is to extract the highest possible terms from the film British OT producers, whether American.
if one member of the "ring" does not get the terms that are consider- ed appropriate, the other members refuse to work for the producer con. cerned and the studio is, in effect, "blacklisted."
The players, for the most part, are succeeding in getting the terms demanded, and the British pro- ducer, at least, is in a serious quandary.
.
He cannot afford to give top- heavy salaries to one or two people, at the expense of all the rest of the east, and possibly to run the risk of impoverishing his film. Still less can be afford to let the playera be snapped up by his American rivals.
Most British producers are try- ing to solve the salary problem by! | discovering and training new talent, but when new talent becomes ex- perlenced the chances are that it will fall to America 'just the same.
