INSURANCE OF MOTOR BOATS.

Rates Based on Length

and Speed.

The growth of the motor boat fleets of the country at sea, in the harbours, and the inland waters, with an attending fre quency of accident and tragedy, has led the member companies of the U.S. National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Under- writers to develop a definite plan for rating motor boats of the private passenger type for pub- lic and property damage liability insurance.

This in no wise invades the field of the marine companies which insure hulls and possibly cargoes for larger vessels as rule. The new plan covers only the legal liability of the assured for damage which may be done by a boat to other persons and outside property.

The new basic rates are for the standard limits of $5,000 $10,000 for public liability, and $1,000 for property damage, The rates for outboard motors range from $10 for boats, under 16 ft. in length, with a rated spoed of 15 miles per hour or

less, to $75 for boats 16 ft. and over in length with a rated speed of over 40 miles per hour. For inboard motor boats with fixed engines the rates range from $25 for boats under 21 it in length with a rated speed of 16- miles per hour or less, to $850 for boats 50 ft. and over in length with a rated speed of over 40 miles per hour. As a rule, the cost of property damage lin- bility will be 50 per cent of the charge for public liability.
