Although the full extent the damage arising from the cent fire on board the motor liner Bermuda may not be known until final survey is held following her arrival in Britain, it is apparent from the reports that most of the superstructure decks and ac commodation is involved that the claim on underwriters will be heavy. The recurrence of heavy fire damage claims, such as these herein described, is a very seri- ous matter for underwriters, and
no less for the owners of such ships, since for the latter the loss of revenue at the height of the passenger and tourist season is not recoverable. There is a growing feeling, particularly, in insurance circles, that the time has arrived when concerted action should be taken with a view to the provision of more efficient and more adequate fire-resisting fire-detecting and fire-fighting appliances and arrangements on board costly passenger liners, and also, where necessary, that more stringent regulations should be drawn up for the guidance of ship's personnel so that the lat ter may be encouraged to exer- cise the greatest possible care, both when on and off duty.

NIGHT CLUBS AT SEA.
The koel of the first of the four new vessels for the Grace Line was laid several weeks ago, and now comes the news that Governor M. F. Larson, of New Jersey, drove the first rivet in the keel of the second
liner at the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company's yard at Kearney, U.Ş., amidst scenes of great enthusiasm, says the Journal of Commerce. At the first keel-laying ceremony only
the shipworkers took part, officials of the Grace Line for the first time! in the history of U.S. shipbuilding according the honour exclusively to the men where labour for the next year or so will make its construc- tion possible.
The four vessels will cost nearly four million pounds, ara designed for the Panama mall service ports in the trade between New York, Central. America, via the Panama Canal, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and are the only liners
ever constructed in the United
States having private batha with every stateroom. Construction plans call for unusual facilities to make tropical sailing comfortable for the voyagera, the dining-rooms being constructed two decks in height and located amidship.
All staterooms are outside, with special ventilation equipment, in- cluding forced cooled air facilities. Outdoor swimming pools, with 1- uminated depths, surrounded by artificial beaches and palm trees, constitute another unusual feature in ocean travel.
The liners also will be equipped with night clubs, open and enclosed dancing space on' deck, trap shooting equipment and modern gymnasiums.
The vessels, with a
length of 608 ft. and displacement of 10,000 tons, will cruise at a speed of 19 knots. Three hundred passengers will be accommodated.
