ATLANTIC RACE.

Small Ships in 18-Days' Race.

On June 27 the Atlantic yacht

commenced race

from Newport, Rhode Island. The

coatest was across 3,000 miles of ocean and it was expected the leaders would finish in 18-days, while all boate, should have reached Britain by July 25 if the weather was reasonably fair. As John Scott Hughes points out in the Evening News, however, the course is long, the ships small, and the hazards considerable.

Discussing the yachts before the race, this writer said:

She was built last Winter in Ger- with salts made by the many, famous British firm of Ratsey, and her crew includes two Ane British sailors, Captain R. B. Waite and Mr. Uffa Fox, British champion dinghy sailor and one of the most experienced and perhaps the boldest deep-water man of our times.

The racing fleet will number ten. All except two are American-owned The two British yachts are Ilex and

Maitenes II.

Ilex is owned by the Royal En- gineers Yacht Club. She is always manned by a crew of Sapper off cera, who sail the old boat with all the dash and drive that is consist- ent with good seamanship. She was built in 1809, so that she has been knocking about the seas for a Ant-long while.

It is explained that the purchase of the ships has nothing whatever to do with the Soviet's proposal that Japanese industry grant it a credii of 50,000,000 yen. now employs eight floating can- reries off Kamchatka and charters more than 30 vessels, to transport marine products and to handle other outward and inward cargoes. “As its five-year plan has progressed, It has needed more and more ships and it figures that it will be cheap- er to own than to charter.

Under the five-year plan, Russia will place 16 freighters of 75,000 tans in the Far Eastern service and its authorities presumably have placed other purchase orders abroad. Activity of Russian ships in Asiatic waters is being watched keenly,
