This traffic attracted adventurers like Hawkins, and the knowledge gained of the navigation of the Atlantic and the times of sailing of the Spanish treasure fleets,, gave the existence of a large rise to number of privateers who became a thorn in the side of the Spanish kingdom and eventually led to its Antdownfall as a seu power.

Although James 1. was anxious to keep the pence at all costs, and allowed the reputation of Britain us u dominant factor in the com- mand of the seas, to be lowered, he did not neglect the Navy.

In his reign top masts were fit- ted, and larger and more seaworthy ships built, so that when Cromwell came into power, he had at his dis- posal a fleet, which only required reconditioning and manning to be- come efficient.

This fleet was soon required for active service, as Holland, relieved from the pressure of Spain, thanks to our defeat of the Armada, be- cama un aggressive rival.

Blake, however, soon cleared the Channel of their ships, and having reduced the Dutch to impotence, Cromwell determined that the power of Britain should be extended
