"RIDING THE BALL" BY SKY BOYS
j
Men Who Cannot Afford to Fall. BUILDING IN CLOUDS.
Like little spiders they toiled, spinning a fabric of steel against the sky, says the Literary Digest in a summarised story of sky scrapers: Crawling, climbing, swinging swooping-weaving a web that was to stretch farther heavenward than the ancient Tower of Babel, or than all the older towers of the modern Babel, as Manhattan has sometimes been tagged.
All weathers alike, close on a quarter of a mile skyward in a year - foor a day coming up the straight, and that takes some spin-
ning.
Up to where "Bryant Park is a pancake," us The New Yorker puts it, "and the Statue of Liberty something to throw at a cat."
"Growing up with a building this! way is like the account of the strong boy (was it 'Hercules?) who began lifting a calf each day so that when they had, both reached maturity he could shoulder the bull," said the photographer to a Survey Graphic writer, who con tinues:

AN ACCIDENT?
Rangoon, June 10. It is believed in some quarters that, with the arrest of a Gurkha ex-Sepoy employee of the late Colonel Morshead on a charge of the latter's murder, the mystery surrounding the Colonel's death has been solved.

He has focused his camera on the "aky boys" who "ride the ball" to! the ninetieth floor- or higher and defy death to the staccato chatter riveting of 1 pneumatic

From every height Mr. Hine has snapped these adventurous youths. He has caught them gliding con- Adently across narrow girders with only the wind at their backs for support, where a slip means a hor- rible death.
-He his pictured them swinging on slender wires over streets a hundred
stories below.
These pictures make it easy to understand the speed and skill with which modern sky-scrapers are erected.
For the men who appear tiny as flies to the spectators in the streets beneath are shown here as muscular, clear-eyed, poised, and self-confident creatures whom Lysippus or Phidias would have delighted to model in imperishable marble.
He couches his story in terms of an imaginary monologue from one skyboy to another, in the mood of emptiness and depression that comes when the big job is done, and life holds nothing but a vague thought of the next tower to be built.
Reminiscences,
Even the weather is all wrong. It seems to this "morning after"
pessimist that fogs and rains will always conspire to shroud the noblest trophy of sky-boy tall. And

It is further reported that the Gurkha made a statement alleg- ing that he was out shooting when he accidentally shot Mors- head. The Colonel remonstrated and, while he was attempting to pall the gun away, a shot from his left barrel was discharged and the Colonel received a fatal wound..
Later his pony returned rider- less and bearing bloodstains.
It was subsequently reported that Col. Morshead's body had been discovered lying on a side of the track on one of the hill- rides out of Maymyo town, with gun-shot wounds.

The result, we learn, is amasa of photography, all of which will be preserved in the building as a memorial to the men who swung the huge girders into place and fastened them with white-hot rivets. In particular, The Evening Post speaks of one of the photagrahs, thus:
One of the pictures which has attracted attention is of a workman swinging out from the building at a terrifying height, to which Mr. Hine has given the poetic title of "Icarus." The name was suggested by the fact that the figure expresses the sense of flight.
In photographing workers on the mooring-mast, Hine was swung out over Fifth Avenue in a specially adapted' basket.
