doubtedly a master navigator who earned the reputation of being the "Pathfinder of the Seas," name which has clung to the eminent man through the ages. Maury was responsible for suggesting the sub- marine cable which was laid on the bed of the Atlantic along the course directed by him. He was the pioneer of deep sen sounding, the steamer lanes, and the intro duction of weather reports. An- other distinguished navigator was ¡Nathaniel Bowditch, who produced the well-known book American Practical Navigator, his world- famous epitome of navigation, which has served navigators ever since it was first produced now over 100 years ago. It is the pro- perty of the U.S Hydrographic Office, and is revised from time to time to keep in step with the march of progress of nautical science. Only two officers wero employed at the Hydrographic Office in 1830 when Goldsborough took charge; to-day. there are 11 officers and 180 civilians, as well as 19 branch offices at important stations in the Pacific and along the Atlantic and Gulf seaboards and on the shores of the Great Lakes, there are 20 officers and a larger number of civilians, played under the supervision of the Hydrographer-in-Chief, Rear- The Admiral W. R. Gheradi. Hydrographie Office is the reposi- tory of nautical information of the world; there are an its shelves 800,000 charts, 100,000. Journala and books ready for issue. 7,000 navigators of the sea and air of all nationalities are on its cor- respondence list; they keep up a flow of information respecting the seas, and the air of the world. The correspondence is extensive; it is on such a colossal 17th July scale that it could hardly be handled by a private enterprise, and navigators could not be placed. 6th July in touch with the fand of informa
