CANADA'S NEW SHIP CANAL.

Details of the Welland

Waterway.

The new Welland Ship Canal, Canada's greatest artificial waterway and one of the finest engineering feats of its kind in the world, is nearing completion. and by the end of May vessels up to 450 fect, in length and drawing 18 feet of water were navigating the canal. Over £25,000,000 will have been ex- pended on the work, says 'the Financial Times.

The new canal, which is actual ly the fourth to be constructed across the Niagara peninsula to circumvent the great cataract, was begun in 1913, but ron- struction was interrupted by the War. The total length of the waterway is 25 miles, and 'the Queenston escarpment is dealt with by eight locks, of which three, Nos. 4. 5 and 6, are twin locks in one flight similar to the Gatum locks in the Panama Canal." Welland Canal have a total lift of 1994 feet as compared with 85 feet lift of the Gatun locks,"

The great height of the locks Nos.. 4, 5 and 6 is illust uted by the height of the concrete wall at the north end of lock No. 6, į this from the coping of lock No. 5 to the bottom of lock No. 4 being 130.8 feet as compared with 158 feet which is the height of the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara.

The usable length of the locks is 820 feet, the width 80 feet,

Two interesting features of the new canal are its terminals and how they were formed.. Port Weller, the Lake Ontario end of the canal, is an artificial harbour, formed by construction of two embankments extending into Lake Ontario for a distance of nearly one' and a-half miles. The entrance is 400 feet wide and widens out to a bottom width of 800 feet at the harbour, which covers an area of 150 acres. Port Colborne harbour, at the Lake
