CAPTAIN CENSURED.

Drunkenness While In Charge Of Ship.

Allogations of drunkenness while in charge of. his ship were made against Captain H. "B. Bilton, of Liverpool, at a local Board of Trade inquiry, at New castle.

Mr. E. E. Robinson, for the Board of Trade, alleged that in November last, while on passage from Three Rivers to Sydney, Bilton was under the influence of drink and unable to discharge his duties.

Captain Ian Cameron McLaren, in evidence, said that he joined the steamer Port Alfred, of Middlesbrough, as first officer.

On various occasions when Bilton had taken too much drink he was unfit to fulfil his duties, which threw extra duties upoh witness. On two occasions witness had to go specially on deck on this ac- count.

Robert Inglis, second mate, stated that while under the in- fluence of drink at Three Rivers, Captain Bilton gave wrong sign- als.

•Captain Bilton was found guilty, severely censured, and ordered to pay £5 towards the cost of the inquiry.

In evidence, he denied drunkenness, and said that he was suffering from bronchial trouble.
