Such a statement I have before me as it appeared in one of the most serious newspapers. It reads: "If we ever get out of the pre sent crisis, then per cent. af the population will have 80 per cent. of all wealth."

The truth of this statement makes it all the more alarming, and serious-minded people must wonder as to the cause of this ap proaching possibility. As it seems altogether unreal, and ought never to come about, something unreal must be leading up to it. In my |opinion such a possibility can only be caused by the present world's unreality.

Now let me refer to what hasi happened in Europe owing to thei fact that gold has been taken to itself a monopolistic position-I do not refer to the happenings in China or to other remote places in the world, but to the position at our door. Ready money, even three months money, is at the rate of 1 per cent. to 2 per

cent whilst money for investment on long terms costs 7 per cent. to 10 per cent. (Roumania and Poland loans, for instance).

A WHOLE WEEK'S NEWSPAPERS IN ONE.

A terrible Naval disaster, in which 18 ratings went down with the ship, and two others died after their rescue,

· occurred when' II.M. submarine Poscidon was rammed and sunk by the Chinese coaster s.s. Yuta, 10 miles off Wei hai-wel. The Yuta picked up a number of the ship's crew, all the officers being saved. A remarkable feature of the disaster was the escape of six-ratings-by-use-of-the-Davis- Submarine Escape Apparatus. They were picked up by boats from H.M. ships that were rushed to the scene. The wreck was located later. A complete report appears in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

An alleged boycott by public motor car drivers in the Colony, of a European lady, had its sequel at the Magistracy. It was contended by witnesses that the lady had been in the habit of under-paying the drivers, who now refused to accept her as a passenger. The allegations were emphatically denied. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL re- ports the case in detail..

*

The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL also contains the only.. complete report of an intriguing case in which a young Chinese was sued for $10,000 for slander of his fiancee's uncle, over an alleged mispropriety towards the girl, which occurred. eight years ago. After hearing lengthy evidence, the parties came to a settlement, agreeing that there had been a misunderstanding.

A disastrous fire which ravaged some old Chinese houses in the Central district of Hong Kong was responsible for the loss of fifteen lives, all Chinese. Some of the bodies were so charred as to be unrecognisable. The fire originated in a "joss shop," and spread with great rapidity, largely, it is thought, due to the wooden staircases in the building. The blaze is fully reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

*

*

-Two Chinese passengers were killed and 29 wounded, including two European members of the ship's crew, when a steerage passenger, a Filipino, aboard the Empress" of Canada, ran amok on the high seas when the vessel was nearing Yokohama. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL gives. all despatches regarding the outrage.

In the sporting world, the first half of the racing season ended in inclement weather, with the unusual spectacles of a double dead heat and two' disqualifications. The meeting
