STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE ADMIRALTY.

Following upon the announce ment of a retirement scheme for lieutenant-commanders, the Ad- miralty has issued a statement that with the Fleet at, its presunt strength no further retirement schemes will be necessary The. statement says:-

"The retirement scheme før lieutenant-commanders appears to have caused some parents to ask themselves whether a boy, who be 'comes an offlebr in the Royal Navy in the present circumstances can look forward to ibis, as his life's career. The Admiralty endeavour so to regulate entries that cadets. may have a reasonable, prospect of in career.

"As regard the executive brunch, Fduring the years which immediate

When the war came to an end the Fleet was reduced to # of peace-time basis, the number these officers greatly exceeded re- quirements, and special steps were taken, in 1920, and 1922, to reduce the numbers. Even after these re- ductions there still remains-a aum- ber of officers in excess. As a re sult of the London Naval Confer- ence the Admiralty are now able to look ahead, and have therefore, offered special terms of retirement to about 150 of these executive

It is desired to emphasise that the only officers nfected by the retirement scheme are those enter- fed during the war and in the years

this reduction has been carried out it is considered that, with the Fleet at its present strength, further re- tirement schemes will not be necessary.

"The rate of entry has been re- duced and it is expected that all officers entering in future - will have reasonable prospects of pro motion to the higher ranks, 31 gineer 'officers, accountant officers, and Royal Marines are not affect- ed."
