Tribute was hul to memory of William Symington. the pioneer of the steamboat. when members of the Institute of Marine Engineers and the Newcomen Society took part in a special service at St. Botolph's, Aldgate, the day being the 100th, anniversary of his death. WALS as carly as 1788 that Symington tried his first marine engine in a small pleasure skiff,! which was propelled by this! means across Dalswinton Lake. the speed attained being five miles an hour, states the Journal of Commerce on March 23. Later he constructed a working |
model of a steam road carriage. but it was as a marine engineer | that he won the fame that is his.
The results of the pleasure! skill experiment were so excel- lent that he was commissioned by an Edinburgh banker, Patrick Miller. to build a larger engine with 18in. Cylinders, and this was tried with success, on the Forth and Clyde Canul in 1789.
