ICE TERROR TO SHIPS.
Constant Patrol of the Arctic.
Iee the greatest terror to shipping in the North Atlantic is now being watched with The little ships of great care.
the "Ice Patrol" are steaming tirelessly up and down the fringe of the great ice fields of the
Arctic.
They are watching the ice with expert eyes, anxious to detect the alightest sign of a break up.
The Arctic winter is by no means over, but it is beginning to moderate, and the shipping of the great trade routes between the United States of America It was
and
now possible to construct a hull
having its main structure of duralumin and the underwater portion and fittings of stainless steel, and actually to save weight over a wooden hull of the same strength, with the added advan tage of no increase in weight due to soakage.
northern Europe cannot afford to take risks. As soon as the warning is "morsed" from the aerials of the "Ice Patrol" ships all the great shipping com- panies will change their routes,
In the Autumn and Winter, hen there is no danger from drifting ice, the ships ply hack- wards and forwards along the great circle" tracks, which are by far the shortest. But as soon ins the Arctic ice is suspected of breaking up they steam along more southerly courses where the danger of drifting ice is less
Mr. Gouge concluded by giving some details of the performance flying boats, and (b) float sen-of the largest heavier-than-air planes. In order that his paper machine yet constructed should not be too long, Mr. Gouge Britain. It has a range of nearly discussed only group (a). Boat seaplanes or flying boats used the main body of the machine as a kull or flotation unit, which was usually extended aft to carry the
tail structure and control Bur- faces.
Making Machine Stable. The hull of a flying boat was generally, in itself, unstable terally when at rest un the water, so that it was necessary to provide some means of making the complete machine stable,
This was done in various ways; in Great Britain the usual prac- tice had been to provide small floats beneath the wings, while in Germany Dr. Dornier had de- veloped stub wings, which were fixed to the sides of the hull about amidships to give the re quired stability. The fact that British flying boats had usually had biplane superstructure, whereas the German boats had in general been monoplanes, might have had considerable in- fluence in deciding the method of laterally stabilising the .re- sults of a considerable num- ber of tests carried out in Britain, it would appear that the British method of stabilising was the more efficient hydrodynami- cally.
The design of a flying boat was naturally divided into two dis tinct parts. Firstly, the hydro- dynamic part, which dealt en tirely with the hull characteris- tics during the take-off run and landing, and secondly, the aero. dynamic part, which dealt with the complete machine when fly- ing. The evolution of a success- ful flying boat hulk depended largely upon tank tests.
General Construction. As regards general construc- tion, the two chief problems to

WARSHIPS IN PORT.
the little ships of the Ice Patrol have to be almost constantly at sea in all weathers.
As soon as the Arctic ice fields) begin to show signs of breaking
the work of the Ice Patrol be comes even more arduous. When a large piece of "berg" begins to drift away to the southward a patrol vessel must follow it and broadcast its position every few hours to all ships nearby.
The navigation of the Ice Patrol must be most accurate, so that they may report the pusi. tion of ice without error.
The Ice Patrol is actually ad- ministered by the United States. but it is kept up by subscriptions from all the leading shipping companies whose vessels pass through the ice area.
