THE KIT-CAT MAY LOCUST

CLOSE.

Restaurant's Future Undecided.

The Kit-Cat Restaurant in the Haymarket, one of London's most fashionable establishments, open ed its doors on March 14 for an hour and a half only.

Soon after eight o'clock the uniformed cloak-room attendants and a handful of waiters were on duty, and the establishment WAS opened.

The tables in the Tudor Room on the ground floor were laid as usual, but all the other rooms, except the lounge, were in dark

ness.

A few customers arrived but de- parted on being informed that there would be no cabaret, no dancing, and no band.

At 0.30 the head waiter left, and the other walters began to strip the tables of their linen and cutlery. The order to turn out the lights and close was given by the manager a few minutes after ten o'clock.

The management, by opening the restaurant for a few hours, prevented the lapse of the licence, which requires that the establish- ment shall be open to the public for some perfod every day.

The first persons to be given an inkling of anything unusual hap- pening were the members of the band, and the cabaret artistes. When they arrived they found waiters walking about in their private clothes, attendants folding up their uniforms, and chairs, and tables in disorder everywhere.

They were told by a representa tive of the management that their services would not be required that day or the next, and were request ed to call again the next day, when it was expected a board meeting of the Kft-Cat Company would be called.

SWARMS 30 elderly inhabitants were greatly MILES LONG.

Invasion Takes Place Every 13th Year.

Swarms of locunts thirty miles long, coming from Arabia, were a feature of the report made by Mr Ballard, of the Plant Protection Society, at the locust conference In Bagdad at which all the Middle East States were represented.

Mr. Ballard pointed out that the home of the locust is the Sudan, It travels to Arabia and from there to Palestine. He said that locust invasions on a large scale appeared to take place every thir teen years. Recorda available

only go back as far as 1790, but from that time to the present day every thirteen years has seen an invasion. Biblical records, of course, show that the plague goes back to the beginning of history. Coming to recent times, there a slight disturbance in the locust world in 1927, which wal probably the vague stirring which preceded the invasion of two years Inter. In April, 1928, locusts were more active and some awarma en- tered Arabla and laid their eggs there. In October, 1929, the ad- vance guard of the invasion mov- ed north and by the following March the whole peninsula was awarming with the insects.. The poets then constituted a very seri- ous menace to the Nile Valley and It was only the desperate efforts made to destroy them which sav ed Egypt.

A small conference was held in February, 1929, at which repre- sentatives of Eritrea, Egypt and the Sudan met and discussed the question as it touched their own territories. The results obtained in respect of information, the matter of pooling intelligence and warnings, were excellent and led

perturbed and could not remem- ber, "come man, come boy," such thing happening before. The usual time of the year for the swarms to appear is between February and April.

В

The locusts breed in the Sum- mer in the Sudan, the progeny pass into Arabia and then lay their eggs.

The hoppers begin to fly in the late Spring and it is then that they are exceptionally dangerous.

It is

pheno- menon with locusts that their paths are almost constant. They perhaps move with the prevailing winds and awing from countries with Summer rain to those where it rains in the Winter, as it is essential that they should find sufficient moisture.

Regarding the possibility of an Invasion this year, Mr. Ballard could not say, but thought that as such damage was done to them last year and Bo many millions were destroyed, and also as there was a highly successful campaign in the Sudan later in the year. It would be surprising if large num- bere did appear.
