COAL VS. OIL IN NAVY.
British Dependence on Foreign Fuel.
In drawing
attention to the anxiety that is manifesting it- self in high quartera concerning what has become, in sober truth, our "peril on the seas," I have studiously avoided sensational- ism. The facts, however, are sufficiently grave, and speak for themselves, writes the Naval Correspondent of the London Morning Post.
The Army and Air Force, a third of the Royal Merchant Mar- ine, and a growing volume of transport and industry are de- pendent on foreign fuel, which can be intercepted at its source. This is a fact no matter how
distasteful,
It is also a fact that the Navy is in a similar plight.

But an increase in the Navy accentuates our dependence on foreign supplies, and so the vici- ous circle goes on, expanding, but never breaking.
As to whether further re- search and the development of pulverised coal may eventually ease the position, I need not now consider. These projects can be uncertain

B.I. Apcar Line steamers have excellent accommodation for 1st and 2nd class passengers. All steamers are fitted with wireless and carry a qualified surgeon.
In advocating a return to the use of British coal in the Royal Navy, I have been careful to em- phasise that such a return must, from the nature of things, be gradual. In new construction in free the coming years we are agents, but in regard to the exist- ing fleet, we are bound emphati- cally by the Naval Treaty.
A Comparison.
The Emperor of India is a coal- burning battleship of 25,000 tons, mounting a main armament of ten 13.5-inch guna. Her horse power is 29,000. The Royal Oak is an oil-burning battleship of 25,750 tons, mounting a main armament of eight 15-inch guns. Her horse-power is 40,000.
Thus, with the negligible addi-
yante.

In short, when all debatable technical points have been con- sidered, and when we have ac- cepted, if we must, the consider- able addition to the toll of un- employed, is it right that Britain should be unable to move the propeller of a single unit of her sole Insurance Policy, the Navy, without the necessity of having to rely on a foreign nation for the means?
