FORD'S FACTORY IN cent

BRITAIN.

1,000 Cars a Day From

Dagenham.

A visit to Dagenham, which is in Essex, reveals that an apparently unpromising site has been selected by Mr. Henry Ford and his asso- elates as the situation for a great factory destined to supply British, Continental, Indian and North African demands for Ford motor vehicles. Others have looked at the site for various purposes, but up- parently have been scared off by its seeming inaccessibility and bog- giness, and by the gigantic tusk of converting it into a base for fac- tories.

What frightens others stimulates the great Henry. and in under a year's time what is probably the greatest conception of a manufac- turing plant for dealing with one product that has ever taken root on British soil will be fully realised.

A Vast Plant.

To-day the skeleton and floors of a vast collection of shops have arisen. A thousand feet square, the shops will be served by a complete railway system. Pronting it to the river are the offices, and behind the offices is a garage where members of the staff will be able to keep their own cars while at work. On one skle of the mass of shops a factory is being erected by one of the American pressed steel companies. Here will be made the steel panels and pillars for the Ford vehicles. Current for power, light and heat ing will be produced on the prem- 1505.

Wages-£100,000 a Week. In front of the main office block a deep-water jetty is being con- structed, and from this point, with- in a few yards. of the final exit from the factory, the finished Ford products will be shipped to their overseas destination. It is planned to employ some 15,000 men when

the whole scheme is completed, and the wages bill will not be less than £100,000 a week. A ayadicate un- connected with the Ford organisa- tion is planning to erect alongside the factory 1,600 houses for the use of the employees.

The factory, with its equipment, will cost £4,000,000. It is being laid out for a smooth and economi- cal production of 1,000 vehicles a diny.

MOTOR TAXATION.

Restriction on British

Trade.

Another effort is being made by The Conference of Motor Organi- sutions to induce the Chancellor of the Exchequer to reduce the taxation of motor vehicles.

A memorandum has been ad- dressed to Mr. Snowden on behalf of the twenty-one organisations It is forming the conference, signed by the Hon. Sir Arthur Stanley, chairman, and Mr. A. E. Cave, the hon. secretary of the conference.

BLUE BIRD'S CREATOR.

Burial on Eve of Life's Triumph.

The tragedy of the Blue Bird has to be written on the same page of history which recounts Captain Campbell's wonderful achievement. i

Mr. Montague Napier, chalman of D. Napier and Son, the man who designed Blue Bird's engine in co- operation with the firm's staff, did not live, by a margin of days, to see the success of his plans.

ment.

As an example of the injurious! effects of high taxation on road transport. It is stated that in some British Industries, notably the cotton industry, motor taxation imposes the equivalent of a tax of from 10 per cent. to 15 per cent. on the transport cost of the goods on each journey.

Other points made in the memorandum are that:-

Of the £42,400,000 yielded by motor taxes in 1929-30 no less than 47 per cent. was taken by the Exchequer for purposes other than roads.
