FEDERAL ROAD GRANT.

A vigorous effort is being made by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland to ensure the reten- tion of the Federal aid roads agreement in its present form. In a statement furnished by the club, it is pointed out that the alteration proposed by the Prime Minister, which he gays will re- duce the payment to the States from £2,000,000 to £1,000,000 per year, will, if ratified by the various State Governments, be very detrimental to Queensland, and will result in a material cut-! ting down of road building pro- grammes, with A consequent great increase in unemployment, The Prime Minister is reported to inve stated at the conference that the 2d. of the 7d. per gallon petrol tax apportioned for the Federal aid roads fund at the present time was not providing anywhere near the £2,000,000 specified in the agreement for distribution amongst the States. In view of the fact that petrol im- portations for the year ended June 30, 1930 (which included many months of financial depres- sion) amounted to approximately 240,000,000 gallons, an increase the of 40,000,000 gallons over previous 'year's total, the R.A.C.Q. disagrees with the in- ference drawn from Mr. Scullin's statement that pétrol. importa- tions during the current finan- cial year will be reduced more than half those of the preceding year. It may be Interesting to note that at the time the agree ment was, originally algned, the total importations of petrol! amounted to only 115,000,000 gallons. The R.A.C.Q. has taken up this matter with the Premier, and has urged Mr. Moore to vigor- ously oppose the Federal Govern ment's proposal, and to insist that the £2,000,000 out of the petrol taxes collected by the Cus toms be paid annually to the States on the existing basis of distribution, for the balance of the 10 years under the Federal ald agreement. The Local Authorities Association of Queensland has advised the B.A.C.Q. that that body is giving its full support to the con- tinuance of the existing. Federal aid agreement. ;
