After suc- starboard, as might be. cessfully manoeuvring the boat to a point near the spot where the whale came to the surface to breathe, the gunner was waiting ready to shoot; the harpoon flew out and the shout "Fast fisk," when the harpoon was deep into the back, was heard with relief and welcomed by all on board.
When a sufficient catch had been made the whales were moored by
their tall rope to the factory-ship, one by one taken
and swung into position; a wire from the fishing winches placed on the casing abaft the skylight was led down and out the slipway and attached to the tail
29pe of the whale. The winch heaved until the tail of the whale was well up into the slipway: meanwhile the heavy wire from one or both of the 40-ton winches was pulled aft into the slipway and then the heavy strops were laid round the tall and the big wire hooked in. within a few minutes The whale was on the blubber deck, where the flensers were ready to alice the blubber fore and aft-often this was done while the whale was being heaved along.
