WHITE STAR LINE.
THE COMPANY'S FINANCIAL POSITION.
Further information concerning the affairs of the White Star Line is contained in the following extracts from a letter sent by Mr. G. H. Ewart to a London paper in mail
week:
part of which consists of articles reprinted from the XIX Century, Edinburgh Review, the Syren, and the Counell of the Royal Statistical Soviety.
Of particular interest is the author's almost passion- nic letter on the subject of the Singapore base which he affirms is an Imperial Insurance. letter was written to the Editor of The Times on July 24, 1923, and a further letter was addressed to the same journal on the same subject on October 17, 1923. Following on these two letters, we have later a third on the subject of Japanese ambitions in Singapore, appearing Co., (and as a letter to The Times In April 1924, which carefully and accurate. ly describes the position of Japan, vis-a-vis Singapore, her polisy after the Great War, the economic needs commerce and of Japan, and her industries. Mr. Drage strikes warning note in his concluding passage:

"In 1930 Japan will be ready, if not before. We are ng we were in 1908, only Japan is far more clever than Germany. Peace
be maintained if it is perfectly clear what our
iz: the Far policy is East and that we mean to stand by it. Otherwise, as in the case of the Crimean War, the Boer War and the Great War, we shall drift into war be- Cause the pacifists will once more be taken at their own valuation an qualified to speak for Great Britain. The naval base Singapore is a test of our re- solution."

Two of the chief problems of the eminent and capable gentlemen who have been called to the task of advising and assisting the Royal Maii Steam Packet Co. are, there- fore, firstly the Guarantee as
Dividends (£325,000 Preference gross per year) and Preference of the White Capital £5,000,000) Star Line, and secondly the liability on the Ordinary shares of the White Star Line.
[Mr. Drage has an extensive ex- perience of naval affairs, having been a member of several com- Imittees on sea, training and chair- man of the national conference on that subject which sat from 1910 1914. He has written extensive-many of whom can now ill afford to

One may appreciate the gravity of these problems, but the Prefer- ence shareholders in White Star Line (who number over 14,800 and
lose even a portion of their dividends or capital) are innocent parties who should not suffer. They invested their money on the Inducements set out in the "Offers For Sale," and since then they have had no part or voice in the control of the company, which has been entirely in the hands of the Ordinary shareholders, that is, the Royal Mall Steam Packet Co. and its Associated and Allied Companies and the directors appointed by them.
In a circular letter dated Decem- bar 31 last the Preference share. holders of the White Star Line have been advised that
a meet-
4
ing (the first, they have been privileged to attend) will be held at which
statement will be made regarding the position of the company.. The position of the White Star Line, however, seems comparatively clear, and it is the position, intentions, and proposals of the Royal Mall. Steam Packet Go. (the Guarantors) that are of vital Interest at the present time to the Preference ahareholdere in White Star Line.
The present market price of the Preference phares (issued at 216.) of 5s. 6d. to 6s, da suggests that there is a fear of something of a drastic nature being proposed...
As proxies must be deposited not less than two clear days before the meeting, which may be called at Committee seven days notice,& for the protection of Preference shareholders' interests should be formed, for the organisation of (60 large a body as 14,800 shareholders, spread all over the British Isles, takes time, and obviously only a small proportion of that number can be present in person at the meeting.

ITALIAN SHIPPING.
For some time past, writes the Journal of Commerce, the influence
Italian of the
Government national shipping has been very strongly felt, and a good deal of the progress which has recently been made is due to the energy of Count, Cinno di Cortelazzo, Minister of Communications, who is responsible for mercantile marine matters.
The fact that he has now been
made Vice-Premier of Italy by Mussolini suggests that in the im- mediate future he will be in a posi tion to exert more influence still.
To what extent his new office will permit him to give further national support to the mercantile marine or to what extent it will cause kis be devoted to political energy to purposes remains to be seen, but it that ever obvious is more Italian shipping has the direct ear of the Dictator.
