IRISH SOCIETY'S BALL

INITIAL CELEBRATIONS PROVE A GREAT SUCCESS.

KISSING THE BLARNEY STONE

For the first time in local history the members of the Irish colony in Hong Kong received official recognition last night, when His Excellency (Sir William Peel, K.B.E., C.M.G.), and Lady Feel were among the guests of honour.

The chieftains of St. George's and St. Andrew's Society appear- ed to enjoy the hospitality of "Pat" which, owing to the genius of Mr. F. P. R. James (the Chairman), was a trifle strenuous at times, especially during the ceremony of kissing the Blarney Stone, for which one had to lean perilously over a turret, and get one's silk lapels smeared with paint.

It cannot be said even at a long stretch or from a misguided sense of patriotism that the jigs and reels were a success, but that was generally because people would dance them who had never seen them before or attended the practices. But it was a great night, and the music, the banners, the flags, and the merry faces conspired to make mere Englishmen forget the battle of the Boyne.
