ICE AT TAKU,

CONDITIONS OF EXCEPTIONAL SEVERITY.

· NAVIGATION TEDIOUS.

The ice conditions at Taku éon- tinue to be severe and several more ocean ateamers have had to be diverted from the port on ac- count of inability to land or dis- charge their cargoes at the inner anchorage.

The coast ateamers are having great difficulty in forcing a pass- age through the ice floes which stretch for many miles in the Gulf, and navigation across the Bar is both tedious and dangerous, It would appear that without a strong wind from the North West there is little chance of an im- provement taking place; as the continued Easterly winds tend to drive the ice towards the shore.

According to the Manchuria Daily News, 'Captain Miki of the Tencha Maru, is reported to have said that the ice at the mouth of the Pelho about the vicinity of Taku and Tangku is thicker than in the river itself. Near Taku,

to be ice-bound. The ice condi- tion in that area is far worse than yet known, and the Tencho Maru was herself harassed seriously by the ice on both outward and home- ward trips. Things are the worst About 40 miles off Laolishan Pro- montory, Port Arthur, where the ice-sheets adrift from Newchwang are overlapping one another, the thickest measuring 8 ft, of which 2 ft. is seen above the water. An encounter with such a piece would prove disastrous.

The seasoned mariners think that this year's ice condition in the Gulf beats anything in the past 10 years.

A wire received by the D.K.K. Head Office, Dairen, says that the 8.8. Chohei Mara working the Tientsin-Tsingtao-Shanghai Line, was damaged in her hull by the ice.
