RESCUE WORK AT SEA.
U.S. "Flying Lifeboats " Scheme Explained.
Rescue work at Beв by the United States coastguard is to bo carried on with "Aying lifeboats," states a Washington message.
Rear-Admiral F. C. Billard, com- mandant of the coastguard, an nounces the award of a contract for five seaplanes of a new type calculated to serve not only for observation and report purposes but for rescues from disabled craft.
A single cantilever wing, with a span of 72 feet is mounted directly over a stout hull of duralumin and
steel.
Two motors with three- bladed "pusher" propellers are mounted side by side well above and back of the wing. The hull is designed to be of sufficient size and strength to enable the plane to land and take off in heavy weather. off shore, where aircraft now in service have been unable to operate.
+
Where present types carry a pilot and observer, the new type will carry a crew of four, and bave space for rescued. "ersona. It will have...range of 1,000 miles, and be equipped with wireless sets for code direction-Anding and tele. phonic communication.
