An important subject raised at |the monthly council meeting of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce in mail week was the disposal of old ships, when the suggestion was made that it would pay the Govern- ment to provide a fund to enable shipowners to dispose of their ships for breaking-up purposes,

able time, and he felt very strongly that it would pay the Government to provide a fund to enable ship- owners to dispose of their shipa for breaking-up purposes rather than sell them to foreigners to com- pete with the United Kingdom in the freight markets of the world.

Run in Competition. To him it was a matter of vital importance, for they found steam- ers were being sold to competitors

good British steamers whose ser- vices had been used to the best possible advantage by British ship- owners, and kept up to the highest state of perfection, after which they were sold at very small cost to foreign nations to run in com- petition with Great Britain.
