must be regulated to ensure the diver's safety. By this means all risk of "diver's head," which has so far been the great drawback to deep diving, is avoided.
When a diver is working at great depths his blood becomes aerated by the nitrogen' which gets into it. If he were to re- turn to the surface too quickly_it would probably be fatal. To overcome this danger the prac- tice has been, hitherto, to push the diver into a decompression chamber immediately he reaches deck and leave him there until his blood condition has become nor- mal. The new system has a great advantage over the older one in that by it the decompressioni chamber is sent down to meet the diver instead of awaiting him on deck. Consequently as his dan gerous journey back to the sur- face is much shortened he is able to work in far greater depths of water than it was possible for jhim to explore under the old
method.
For diving in shallow waters the new device for enabling men to escape from wrecked sub- marines can be used. This de- Singa-Vice consists of a sort of jacket
