These are hippopo- tamus teeth, or senhorse tusks as the catalogue has always called them." They were curly and flut ed, worth only an eighth of elephant Ivory, I learned. There were dozens of them in boxes.

"I've seen

some funny-looking tusks in my time," said Mr. Lord. "One had broken, when the ele phant was young, I supposé, and had kult itself together again no- turally. Another had grown right. round till it was like a huge hoop- you could bowl it across this floor."Un Patin He showed me some of the On demand curiosities this store has acquired from time to time. There was an elephant's molar-"It weighs four- teen pounds, and they have four!”: —an elephant'a jaw-bone, too heavy a weapon, I thought, even for Sam- aon, boars' tusk, and many other marvels..

Between Bugsby's Reach, just be- low the East India Docks, and Gal. lons Reach, just below Woolwich Arsenal, for instance, there is the largest area of enclosed dock water in the world, the Royal Victoria Dock, the Royal Albert Dock, and the King George V. A thousand vessels of all descrip tions pass Gravesend every day how does London accommodate Twenty-five million tons of them? merchandise enter the port. every year-where is it housed?

I know where the imported Siberian mammoths' 'tusks are stored. Mr. Lord, the foreman of the ivory warehouse, an expert on his subject, showed them to me among the heaps of elephant tusks on the floor.

Off The Ice.

"These," he said, pointing to some curly ones of a dusty brown colour, "were found in the soil; but this one came from a river bad." It was dull blue. There was a pair of beautiful, long reddish ones near- by that looked as though they had come from a tortoise-shell mam- moth or at least a blond one. "Those were found preserved in ice." said Mr. Lord. "The whole mammoth is sometimes found in al- most perfect preservation in such instances, with the meat quite fresh, We were told that dogs ate away part of a mammoth's front legs after the body had been got out of

the ice."

"He told me that these tusks wers, used for commercial ivory-it is a solemn thought that when one-pots- the red, one may be treating cave- lierly a "tusk, that pocked a bronto- saurus sixty thousand years ago.

"There are 6,000 to 10,000 nut- moga in each of these boxes," enid my guide, pointing to stacks and stacks of them, and there are about 6,000 boxen here now. Each of the nuts must be picked over and examined for holes, because a hole allows the oil Inside to evaporate and lowers the quality of the nut. P.L.A. men do the examining.”

But it was on the next foor that I found the schoolboys' de light. It was the "Bark Floor," storing cinchona bark for the mark ing of quinine, capsicums, chillies, and so on. I sampled a capsic, m seed, and, turning away to hide my diatomiture saw two metal bottles In the basin I anw and a basin. my own flushed face mirrored in the silver surface of £70 worth of My guide picked up quick-silver.
