BLUES NEED REST.
With the advent of a new net- demic year the athletic authorities at Oxford and Cambridge will have seriously to consider the question of reform if they are to continue to do themselves justice In international athletics, writes a Manchester Guardian correspon- dent. The failure of the Oxford and Cambridge team agalust Frinceton and Comell this sum- mer has brought the matter to a head, for there is no doubt that the great bulk of the British team were dead stale. And no wonder! The university season, which opens in October, is a very strenu- with the inter-"Varsity relays at the end of this term and the sports at the end of the Lent Term. summers they are occupied. This year Princeton and Cornell ceme over, whilat next year it will be Yale and Harvard, and this sys- tem is to continue.
Some people take the view that matches of this nature do more good than anything else in the cementing of good relations be- tween nations, and there is no doubt that the effects are far- reaching. The winning or losing. of those matches may be of little conséquence, but the fact remains that we do like to see our young undergraduates giving of their best. If they are to be able to do so, the Oxford and Cambridge official must get together and work out a plan for reserving their leading athletes for the im- portant matches.

QUESTION OF TEAM PURCHASING.
Arsenal and Chelsea Lead the Way.
LONDON STARS.
There is no shadow of doubt. that London is at last becoming the hub of the Soccer world, writes J. G. Orange in the Evening News, The transfer of Alex Jackson from Huddersfield to Chelsea has added another illustrious name to the list of famous footballers who now play for London clubs. With in the limits of the metropolitan. boundaries .we... may row.... BCBS players like Jackson James, Gal. lachor, Messrs. Jack, Cheyne, Vic- tor Watson, Ruffell and Astley, to nami a few. Surely we never had such a brilliant array or the pos sibilities of such excellent football entertainment before.
Jackson's arrival in London to join Chelsea's other famous stars has given us two grounds-nt least where a crowd of 60,000 ought to be, and probably will be the minimum.
The Arsenal, Cupholders and, at the moment of writing,, undefeated in the League, will assuredly be a better draw than last season; and Chelsea's return to the First. Division and the accumulation of 30 many great footballers in the team has brought about a revival of interest in the club's fortunes to an extent which Chelsea them. selves scarcely dared to hope for.
Nor is this expansion of interest limited to Cheisen and the Arsenal. West Ham with always be gather- ing more now supporters round them while they continue to play football of the entertaining type. And Tottenham Hotspur, though they have scarcely lived up to the great things of the start of the, season, must always be considered as one of the best drawing attrac tions in London. The fame achiev ed by the Spurs a few years back still lingers in the minds of their followers.
+
It was obvious that the pace set by Mr. Herbert Chapman when he signed on players of the standard of Jack, James and.. Halliday for the Arsenal would have to be fol lowed by the other London clubs. Chelsea have not lost much timo in following suit, and the 'Spurs have also been concerned in the gathering together of a team by means of which the club hopes taż regain its lost prestige. -
I have been asked whether this buying of teams is healthy for the sport, whether it is wise.
Frankly--would-much-sooner seo a team built up of young i players developed by the clubs themselves. One can take so much more pride in a side of that sort.
But finding and fostering young players and bringing them to that high degree. so necessary for League football a long and tedious job. The 'Spurs, who have given the system an extended trial. must be wondering whether it is worth while.
There will always be conflicting.. opinions, even among the clubs themselves, as to which policy should be pursued, team buying or team building.
Not all the clubs can view the subject from the same angle. If I was connected with "n-First Divialori club I should feel it my duty to put before the public, who are the backbone of every profes... slonal club, the best possible en tertainment. I should feel it my duty to uphold the good name of London football, of the First Division, and of my own club, And to these ends I would buy the best players going.
Obviously the clubs of lesser
