Mitchell was for some con- siderable time an officer of sailing vessels, including the Centurion, of which clipper he was Chief Officer for a period of 18 months. He joined the Indo-China Steam Navigation Company in August, 1891, as Third Officer and grad ually gained promotion until he was given command of one of the Company's vessels. After thirty- one years of faithful service, the late Capt Mitchell retired on pension in October, 1922, and re- turned to England.
