GOOD RUGBY

STORY.

Referee with a Cow Bell:

'TOO EASY !”

Recent reminiscences of retired Australian cricket umpires recalls an amusing incident for which a referee on the football field was responsible, anys The Sun.

The occasion was a match at O'Connell between's local toon and ferde was Mr. Fred Jennlugs, noted team from Bathurst, and the re- in the West for his long distance walking feats.

Mr. Jennings, as was his wont at "bush" fixtures, used a cow bell instead of a whistie. Soon after the game commenced, a'Bathurst player, after having run half the length of the field and easily aide-stepped the full-back, was about to place the ball behind the posts when he was pulled up by a furious ringing of the cow bell which almost scared the life out of a racing colt grazing in an adjoining paddock.

"What was that for?" angrily de- manded the Bathurst captain.

"Too easy! Too easy!" calmly replied the referee. And he ordered a five yards' scrum.

The Y.M.C.A, defeated the Uni- versity by three goals to two yes- terday. The run of the play changed with the change of ends. In the first half the "y were in the limelight and held the advan- tage of the odd goal in five.

The second half witnessed re- peated attacks by the 'Varsity for- wards, but a sterling display in goal by Atyeo kept the invaders out and stopped all further scor- ing.

Commencing the game two men short, the "" were soon, on the offensive and Marton and Price found the net in the first five minutes.

Souza and Roy, how- ever, equalised during raids on the visitors' goal. An individual effort by Ashton led to Price scar- ing after receiving the ball from the goalkeeper.
