SKIPPING AS AN AID TO PHYSICAL FITNESS.

Feeling in particularly fine trim, he set out to beat the record of an American who, he had heard, had skipped 15,000 in 2hr, and was pre- pared to challenge the world, and a polleeman in afelbourne who threw behind 14,000 odd turns in

So well did Watts. Skipping appeals to many who 1hr. 33 min. value health and know the neces-perform that he got through 13,650 Bity for exercise, writea Eddle Kann in the Sydney Referee. It is a fine and simple method of recrea tion. It aids athletic development and the attainment of the physical fitness.

In consequence, it is adopted by numerous athletes in their training, particularly by the boxing fraternity.

As a competitive pastime, it has been heard of little, but, as in other spheres, one can become highly pro ficient in the art of skipping with faithful and regular performance. Thus from time to time some res markable feats have been achieved by the artisans of the twirling rope.

A feature of the game was the sound defence of both teams. The Former Pupils played one man short which crippled their 'forward line, but, thanks to a hard work- ing defence, they managed to hold their opponents and beat them.. The Varsity had extremely had luck in pot scoring, their final efforts being always checkmated by the vigilant home defence.

Deal, September 10. Misa Peggy Duncan, who start- ed to swim from Cape Gris Nez, to-the English coast at 8.20_last night, landed at South Foreland at 12.35 this afternoon.

When the news that Miss Dan- can was nearing her goal spread a huge crowd assembled and gave her a thunderous reception when she stepped ashore.

Miss Duncan's time was 16 hours 15 minutes, a little over an hour worse than

Gertrudo that of Ederle, the American girl.

Stung by Jelly Fish. Smoking a cigarette and looking

"The swim was quite uneventful," she said, "except that I was atung' on the face by a jelly fish, but that. soon passed and did not trouble

me.

"During the swan I had cocoa and beef tea. Throughout I used the trudgeon stroke.

"The temperature of the water gave me some muscle trouble, and that was the only thing that pre- vented me from breaking Miss Ederle's record.”
