On Monday, Mr. T. S. Whyte- Smith passed sentence of three months' hard. labour on a Chinese charged with larceny by bailee of 3150 which was entrusted by his master in Hong Kong to pay the wages of fokis in Kowloon.

WHALE COLLIDES WITH LINER.
New York, July 14. Passengers in the liner Samaria, who arrived at New York to-day, state that on Friday a whale ap peared alongside the ship, it div ed. under the liner, but in coming to the surface struck the sharp prow of the ship, and in a few minutes the sea was stained with hlood.
The whale did not appear again, and the passengers believe that it was killed.

The tide table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-predict ing Machine, which includes 40 com ponents for the better prediction of tles, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Doberck during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.
