The British Sailors' Society has just issued its report on the ocean

rary service, instituted by the society, in which it points out that the number of libraries issued to December 31 of last year reached the grand totul of 23,949, which represents nearly of a million three quarters volumes. At the present time; more than 1,000 British Merchant! ships are furnished with these libraries.

tional and technical works. have abundant evidence from the men themselves, of all ratings, that the selection of books pro- vided meets their requirements in every possible way and we are also fully aware that these oraries have been the means of improving the social life of the men to great extent, thereby creating a better feeling of contentment throughout the ships in which they have been installed. All libraries conform to a standard classification which has been specially adopted by a competent library committee, and our long and unique experience which has brought us in close personal touch with the men has proved without doubt that our selection of books is one which is beat suit-
