NOBLE EXERCISE.
BEGINNING AND GROWTH OF FOOTBALL."
Four codes of football away lol- lowers of the sport throughout the world to-day. Each code had its particular origin during the last century, but the roots of football as a pastime go deep into the days of ancient Greece and Rome.
According to many authorities. the Greeks germinated the game under the name of "arpasto"-im plying the carrying away of a bali or object light enough to be carri
ed or kicked.
Though this. Is the first known reference to a sport in which con tending groups battled for an ob jeet with the intention of carrying or kicking it to a specified goal,
historians claim that a form of the
game was played before the days of Greece.
Tribal groups evolved a game in
which a stuffed sphere was carri- ed, kicked, or thrown towards the village of an opposing tribe over miles of country, each endeavour- ing to force the ball into the citadel of the opposing faction."
By eliminating kicking from this game, and introducing a netted stick for the throwing or carrying of a slone, the American Indians speeded up their sport, and evolved lacrosse.
