CALCUTTA BARRED.
BELGENLAND. NOT TO CALL THERE THIS YEAR.
Calcutta, July 31. Calcutta has been cut out of the itinerary of the luxurious Red Star liner Belgenland, which for six years has visited the port on her voyage round the world.
This step, which was fore shadowed when the Belgenland Harbour in was at Diamond March last. has been taken as a result of the condition of the Hooghly. It is understood that if the Red Star Line and the Ameri can Express Company, are satis- fied that the state of the channel will be better in March, 1932, than it was this year, the vessel will Jaguin call at Calcutta.
Next year, therefore, according¦ to present plans, the Belgenland will go direct from Singapore to Colombo and thence to Bombay. A small party of tourists is ex- pected to come to Calcutta by train from Colombo and a larger group is likely to travel acroSS from Bombay.
The managers of the tour have left Calcutta out of the itinerary with reluctance as the city is a convenient starting point for tours upcountry.
The Belgenland is of 27,200 tons gross, draws nearly 80 ft. of

It will be recalled that the case of the Belgenland was cited by Mr. A. W. Michie, Senior Pilot of the Bengal Pilot Service, in a striking address to the Rotary. Club of Calcutta a few days after the arrival of the vessel at Dia- mond Harbour in March this year. Describing the "slow but steady deterioration" of the Mid- dleton Bar in the Hooghly, Mr. Michie said that whereas in 1929 the Belgenland was able to stay four days at Diamond Harbour, this year, owing to the condition 4
the Middleton Bar, it was necessary to cut one day off the vessel's stay.
