first class county matches was held up by rain and consequently there was no definite result in any of the matches. At Chesterfieith where Derbyshire and Yorkshire were engaged, not a ball was bowled during the three days.

Sussex, after being 152 runs be- hind on the first innings made a remarkable recovery. in the second innings scoring 302 for the loss of three wickets. Duleep- Binhjl contributed 185 not out to this total. At the close of play, Sussex, after being sel 432 runs to win, were 129 runs behind with seven wilkets in hand.

Five centuries. were recorded. Russell and Walker passing the 150 mark. Pope of Essex regls- tered his first century this season against Sussex, and he and Russell were responsible for 301 runs out of a total of 362

Mayer returned the best bowl- ing figures, taking 6 Hampshire wickets for 43 runs. Bowley claimed 9 wickets in the match with Essex for 167 runs,
