ADVENTURES IN A JUNGLE MacKENNA PLAYING IN GEORGE

FIRE.

TREES LIKE TORCHES.

An Ipoh resident who is staying on Kledang HE writes to the Times of Malaya.

I had an interesting adventure on the way up the Hill on a Monday afternoon, at about 4.30 p.m. when, on rending a bend in the bridle path, I heard a roaring sound like the rush of a high wind through a pine forest. There was, however, very little breeze and, when I looked up, I saw that the jungle on both sides of the path was on Üre. The hent from the fire was intense, but

I hurried through as desired to get up the Hill that evening.

At this part of my journey the jungle fires were not very near the path-that experience was to come later when I was higher up the Hill where the path runs through virgin jungle. Safely past the first part of the blaze. I was able to stop and take stuck of the position.

Next there was a crashing amongst the scrub which is matted round the roots of the big jungle trees and I made sure that, at long Inst, I was going to meet one of the Kledang panthers-one of those the old Chinese hill coolie rejoicing in the name of Apek (old man) de clares he has seen from time to time. I tried to assure myself that the punthors would be too scared by the fire to take any notice of me, but all the little hairs on the back of my head and neck would sit up. Here I may explain that one's hair does not "stand on end' when one is frightened. It just "aits up," but that is quite enough.

Trees Blaze Like Torches. Well, there was a final crash is the jungle and out plunged, not a panther but a wild boar, with his "missus" and half-a dozen little piglinga The old boar appeared to be very annoyed at the fire because, as he went up the path at a galop, he looked back at least twice,

Meantime, there was I with a fire behind ine and one just in front of me and such deniasns as the jungle contained up and about in alarm,

The fames swept quickly up the hillside, bowled across the path and up the slope, leaving, as with the fire I first encountered dead 'trees ablaze like torches. Some of these blazing trees were just alongside the nath and when they burned through and fell some fell across the path one bringing down the telephone wire, which thick copper wire snap ped like thread with the burst ends whipping up into the air.

I did not feel very happy at this stage, but I soon saw that the un dergrowth was so dry that it burned to ashes very quicky and that if kept a sharp pokout for falling trees I could get past what had been,

"ABIE'S IRISH ROSE."

Charlos "Buddy" Rogers, whose rise to movie fame has been noth- ing short of sensational, has one of the featured roles in the pic- turised version of Anne Nichols' "Abie's Irish Rose" now showing at the Central Theatre.

Rogers has been in option ple- tures in a little over two years, but in that short space of time has] been heralded by all movie fans.

Paramount was quick to realise the popularity of the young player and recently elevated him to com- plete stardom. Perhaps no other player in motion pictures to-day has enjoyed the record Rogers has made for himself.

Pick from hundreds of candi- dates by a committee appointed by the motion picture, concern two years ago for the purpose of find- ing a typical American youth, Rogers was given an opportunity to attend the Paramount Pictures School in New York City. He was given the leading role in a gradua tion picture in which all of the members took part.

Then

Soon after this production was released Rogers was given a role in support of Clara Bow. came the master epic of the air, "Wings," Rogers was immediately acclaimed for his work in this film and his fan mail leaped with bounde until now, he receives more fan mail than any other male atar in Hollywood, a jure sign, that Roger is held in the highest esteem by the public.

His first role in "Abie's Irish Rose" will serve to increase his Popularity. He portrays the role of Able, the Jewish boy who falls in love with Rosemary, the little Irish lass. The role of Rosemary is filled by Nancy Carroll, looked
