SLAVERY.

This Year May See It Ended.

COMMISSION IN SIBERIA,

Stewart Brown special cor- respondent, Bangkok Daily Mail and United Press, writes from Paris:

This year may see the last vestige of slavery or forced labour wiped off the earth.

With the opening of the new year a commission of three mem- bers accompanied by many assis tants has left Paris for the tiny Republic of Liberia on the west coast of Africa to decide impartially whether Liberia still bas any traces of slavery or forced labour.

This investigation, which the | Republic of Liberia demanded of the League of Nations following disparaging comment from other For Spring and Summer wear nations that slavery was still there are hats in imitation Panamarampant in Liberia, will last four made of Bangkok straw, delicate for five months. LORD DEWAR.

Death of Head of Whiskey Firm.

London, Yesterday. The death is announced of Lord Dewar.--Reutor.

CONSULAR CORPS.

I

The slavery connection adopted by the League in 1926, and which so far has been signed by 28 nations, seeks the entire abolishment of slavery or enforced labour, which is still known to exist in certain colonies of Africa.

The United States, which early convention and has ratified the been one of the prime movers in its enforcement, has taken such an in- terest in the commission's work that it recently appointed M. Henry Carter of the State Department to becomie Charge d'Affaires ad interim at Monrovia, Liberia, to observe and assist the work of the international slavery commission,

NEW CUTLERY.

A Cursory Chat on Beatl.

FOR SUMMER OUTINGS.

What is anticipated to be of great success swimming parties and pienie parties this Summer is à now Invention on cutlery ware, called "Beat" which is on view in the hardware department of Messrs. Lane, Crawford Ltd.

"Beat" is non-fragile, and it is a material of charm and appeal to the household, as well.

It is adourless, yet beautifully coloured, and it possesses a quality which is unique and very different from china, glass, earthenware, cel- luloid, and similar products, and it is

'tasteful yet tasteless."

With "Beat" there is the grent advantage of it being non-inflamo- mable, hut, it is said this new ware ces not subject itself to dry heat, that is, heat of the ovens.

Another advantage of value (to the clumsy persons), is that "Beat!" does not chip or break readily, and therefore, "Beat!" is safe, and yet a decorative.

It is ideal for plenics, and, what is mnre, it saves bills, which one incurred would undoubtedly be through the breakage of china or glass ware.

"Beat?" is of British make, being a product of some synthetic powder, which is manufactured at Home.

In his Latin speech the retiring Senior Proctor of Oxford made re- ferences to the daily "Increase of those things which disturb our peace."

The Lord Mayor's Fund for the relief of the distressed mining areas will be wound up shertly. The huge amount of £1,750,000 has been handled.

The League hopes that the work of the commission can be finished bofore June 30 in order that report can be made during the summer to the League. It appears that Liberia is withholding her ratification of the convention until the investigation has been com- tion, protested against the notion pleted.

in this regard.

Certain French quarters are fight- ing the efforts of the international convention because they believe it detrimental to the interests of the French colonies. They pointed out that for years the colonists have only been able to put new estates under cultivation and modernise Africa through forcing the natives to work. The natives are sometimes captured at the point of a gun and forced to work for a certain period, after which they are released and paid a small sum for their labour.

A recent writer in the French Depeche Coloniale declares that colonisation is not a pretty senti- mental business and if the African colonies are to be developed forced labour is necessary, otherwise the nations had better abandon their attempts. He states that it is only

through force that the natives can be persuaded to work, and by their forced work civilisation is vaticed.
