This year may see the last vestige of slavery or forced labour wiped off the earth.

With the opening of the new year a commission of three mem- bers accompanied by many assis tants has left Paris for the tiny Republic of Liberia on the west coast of Africa to decide impartially whether Liberia still bas any traces of slavery or forced labour.

Certain French quarters are fight- ing the efforts of the international convention because they believe it detrimental to the interests of the French colonies. They pointed out that for years the colonists have only been able to put new estates under cultivation and modernise Africa through forcing the natives to work. The natives are sometimes captured at the point of a gun and forced to work for a certain period, after which they are released and paid a small sum for their labour.

A recent writer in the French Depeche Coloniale declares that colonisation is not a pretty senti- mental business and if the African colonies are to be developed forced labour is necessary, otherwise the nations had better abandon their attempts. He states that it is only

through force that the natives can be persuaded to work, and by their forced work civilisation is vaticed.
