float was alongside the Stoviken within a few minutes. Then followed a stlif fight with the flames, which burned for, about two hours and a half before they were brought under control, and it was almost 4 p.m., before the Firefloat was withdrawn,

Naval Assistance

3

In addition to the Firefloat, party of Naval men and also local tugs belonging to the Dock Company wont to the assistance of the Stoviken and Inspector condered valuable service. Ogg and a detachment of the Water Police were also early alongside an Felice launch, and were responsible For a good deal of salvage work.

Although fire was fierce it only burned the ship's coal, most of which was consumed, whilst the remainder was under water, the bunker having be flooded before the flames were final- y extinguished. There were 3,200 tons of coni in No. 3 coal bunker and 200 tons in No. 2. The extent of the dam- lage has not yet been ascertained but the cont in No. 2 hold was thoroughly wet.

The flooding of the bunker had the effect of giving the ship a slight list, and after the fire had been extinguished it took some time to pump the water Jout.

Other parts of the ship escaped dam- age, except places near the bunkern, where the water caused a certain

amount of damage.

Smouldering at Sea?

It is reported that the coal began mouldering whilst the ship was at sea, in March 25, Efforts were made to ruppress an outbreak of fire, but the smouldering still continued and even- tually took flame on Saturday, luckily, The agents of the Stoviken are. Mesars Waller & Co., of Prince's Building.
