The American community held the first Washington Dail since 1925 on Saturday, which was A great success, Many of the American members of the Hong Kong com- munity came up and helped to swell the number which were already large as nearly every опе in Canton was present.

The decorations were tastefully

thought out, the hall of the Canton Club (where the ball was held) being decked out in greenery, with myrlade of fairy lights in red, white, and blue.

Mr. Douglas Jenkins, American Consul-General made a welcome speech, which was aptly phrased, as is ever the case when Mr. Jenkin talka.

This marks the closing of the Shameen season, which has been notable for a remarkably successful

BANISHEE'S CRIMES

Convicted of Theft of Scarf

Tsoi Yeung, a returned banishee, was at the Kowloon Magistracy this morn- ing sentenced to 8 months' hard labour and 12 strokes of the birch, for re- turning before his term of 10 years from 1928 had expired..

A further charge of the theft of a blue scarf from a Chinese woman at 722 Nathan Road was preferred against him. He pleaded guilty and was sen- tenced to four months' jail with hard labour, this term to run consecutively with the first sentence.

A charge of offering a bribe of $2.80 to a detectiva was also registered against the banishee but this dropped,

The accused was arrested in Prince Edward Road with the scarf, An in- quisitive detective questioned him as to its ownership, and accused told him that he had stolen it;

As regards the alleged bribery money ($2.80) his Worship made an order that it be returned to the prisoner at the termination of his jail sentence.
