In consequence of the ranted attack by smugglers or pirates on the I.-C. S. Tuckwo near Chinklang, when one Innocent person was killed and a quartermaster wounded, some inquiries were made in regard to the provision of armed guards on vesaola plying the Yangteze.
Early last year, several articles appeared in the North-China Dally News in regard to the provision of armed naval or military guards on British steamers plying on the Yangtze and serving the coastal ports of Ching and recently in the House of Commons a reply to a question was to the affect that the Navy was doing its utmost to pro- teet merchant seaman in 'Chiness waters.,

One of the most remarkable feats
of seamanship during the recent gales was that aaccomplished by Capt. W. L. Charlton, of the Brocklebank liner Maibar, who navigated his steamer over 1,000 miles from mid-Atlantic with the steering gear useless and without assistance. The Maihar (7,556 tons), in spite of these handicaps, reached Brixham almost At schedule time to embark a pilot for the up-Channel voyage to Lon- don. The stranding of the Chinese str. Shubo which went aground on December 27 in the centre of the
Hain-tan rapids, 40 miles above Ichang, has caused a serious altua-, tion in upper river shipping circles that may ultimately bring about a cossation of traffic unless the wreck is soon removed. The narrow chan- net is completely blocked on one side and engineers who have viewed the wreck are of the opinion that unless the ship is removed a fall of two feet in the river's haight will cause a complete blockade and hold up all shipping.
It is said that the ship is a total loss and has been pirated of what little was left that might have been said to have been notified of the salvaged. The authorities dangerous position of the Shuho but so far no steps have been taken
to remove her.
