Junk Crew's Narrow Escape

· PITIFUL PLIGHT IN DARK

Pitiful cries of "save life" Inside the storm refuge for small craft at Yaumati were, fortunately, answer- Jed in the small hours of Saturday morning so that the crew of a large jcargo-boat, having seen their craft battered morcilessly against the breakwater by the strong monsoon, were saved in the nick of time.

The junk had a load of steel. joista valued at about $6,000 and had gone into the shelter overnight.

At about two o'clock in the morning, the anchor chain anapped, possibly owing to the strain. Drift- ing helplessly and in danger of collision, the boat was carried against the concrete and granite breakwater.

Child Nearly Forgotten She then made water rapidly and began to sink by the stern. Hay- ing assombled on deck, the crow nearly forgot the presence aboard

of a child who was asleep in one of the pigeon-hole cabins that is typical of Chinese small craft. The
