Mr. D. G. Kerridge, "father" of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway dining cars, who is to re- tire shortly on the age limit, was in charge of the Arst dining car which ran from Euston in 1989. He is of opinion that the Victorians were $ much less disgruntled generation than the diners of to day.

"It may have been," he said, "that dining cars were a novelty and that. the_passengers wore too pleased with the new facility to complain, but the fact remains that they were gulet, felaurely and satisfied with everything. They were always ready to acknowledge that you were doing the best you could for them. "Since the war," he said, "people have been norvy' and difficult to undertaking, he has agreed to please, and in spite of the fact that necept the allotment to him of the plain food of the 'nineties has 28/994 ordinary shares and six given place to an abundance of founder shares respectively in the dishes and plenty of variety the company (credited as fully paid) tendency to complain and demand and the balance of $565,000 in all sorts of impossible things seems cash.

Shy Passengers

"In the old days," said Mr. Ker- ridge, "one often met people who [did not feel comfortable in tho public car. They asked to bo served in the private compartments be. cause they did not like dining with a lot of other people."

**To-day, however, there 骤 variant of

the 'Bame shyness.

People make for corner seats, hate to have strangers sitting opposite, and frequently behave in a can- tankerous manner if another por son comes to the same table."

He told a story of the obstinacy of passengers in the earlier days. Before trains were "articulated" and the dining saloons were separ ate, passengers had to enter and leave the dining car at stopping stations.

On this occasion a batch of

diners should have left the car at Rugby but they refused to make

Later it was decided that the new route should follow the electric line from Milan to Tirano (through Lecco, Varenna, Colico, and Sondrio), and that a further line should connect: Tirano with Bormio, where the tunnel will begin. Over eleven miles will have to be drilled through the heart of the mountain | to reach Prato, which will be link- ed up by a short line of railway to Resch, on the Austrian frontier, where the Adige has its source.

When completed, the Stelvio tun- nel will be the third longest tunnel in Europe, coming close after the Simplon tunnel and the Apennine tunnel between Florence and Bologna. It will probably be open- ed for traffle this year.
