ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION OF A NEW BOOK
GUIDE TO SHIP MASTERS
Just two months ago the "Journal of Commerce" published a omall book entitled "Nautical Stability for the Use of Shipmasters, Officers and Others," by Thomas Graham, B.Sc.. M.I.N.A. So great has been the measure of success which followed the publication of the book that a second edition was printed almost at once, and is now on sale.
Careful Study
How much shipowners appreciate the value of this book is demonstrat ed by the fact that various com panies have placed large orders for enpies to be supplied to their ships for the use of their masters, and officers. They feel that the subject is one which merita careful study by their sea-going officials, and at the. same time they
acknowledge that Mr. Graham has dealt with the sub- ject in
a particularly simple and lucid manner. One company ordered 60 copies, another 50, others 36, 30, 14. and so on....These figures show conclusively the value of the book, which is sold at the modest price of 2s. 6d.
Other purchasers include several eminent members of the legal pro- fession who recognise that the book can give them valuable knowledge on a complicated subject. Individual masters and officers all over the world are subscribing by almost every post.
Scope of the Book "Nautical Stability is, the direct cuteatae of much close association with shipmasters and officers, ta whom stability information has been supplied by Mr. Graham, and many of these officers have disclosed a keen and willing interest in the sub- ject.
It thus appeared to the author that there was room for a brief and pic: torial presentation of the subject dismantled of all mathematical formulae, emphasising the significance of results rather than the means of their derivation.
Therefore the book is not a text. book on stability, but a guide to the understanding and use of the in-

Journal, "Shipbuilding and Shipping Another Important weakly shipping Record," says
"The author has succeeded in making this little volume both inter- esting and instructive, and it can be thoroughly recommended to all those who desire to know about the fac tore which ensure the safe handling of ships.
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences. being very small
The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and, change of current, the two phenomena being quite distinct,
