EARLY HISTORY AND ASSOCIATIONS
ORIGIN OF NAME
THE CHINA MAIL,
There has always been much speculation as to the derivation of the name of Scotland Yard. I am often asked about it, and have been, requested by several to give my views about the reason why certain pieces of riverside land near Trafal gar Square were first called "Scot- lande" then "Great" and "Little" Scotland Yard, writes the Rt. Hon. John Burns in the "Observer."
Since Alfred's time the district referred to by Stow, Strype, Wheat- fley and others, was, as proved by | Aggas's`· Map, 1578, and Norden's Map, 1693, closer to the then wider river than now.
Since the embankment of the PRESENT, Fast and Future won river, land which must have often

House of Scottish Kings "On the left-hand from Charing Cross be also fair tenements, late- ly builder till ye come to a large. Pot of Ground enclosed with brick, and is called Scotland, where great Buildings have been for the receipt of the Kings of Scotland and other Estates of that country.

CIVIL LAW
MR. SHAW AND THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
The weekly paper, "Die Liter arische Welt," put to its readers the question, "What about the Ter Commandments?" and is now pub lishing some of the answers it re- ceived. There are correspondents who frankly confess that they caus not remember the Ten Command. ments, and practically all of them agree that they are no suitable basis for modern law. At the head there is to be found the answer given by Mr. Bernard Shaw:-
38
In the course of a public lec- ture I once proved the insuffi- ciency of the Ten Commandments;
an expression of modern morals, and I caused a scandal by it. In my book. "An Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism." I pointed out the divergence be tween the Commandments and: civil law. All law codes are founded upon a moral that might | be reduced to Ten Command- ments. But the moral on which the modern civil law codes are hased has bever yet been formu. lated, nor will it be as long as capitallam watches Press and platform.
