RECENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INCREASES

CARGO VESSELS' IMPORTANCE

The Italian Government has created a special commission to examine the subventions granted to home shipping companies and to recommend, when necessary, increases which

may be deemed advisable in view of the foundation of new services or the im- provement of existing ones. As a re- cult, the committee has recommended that increased subventions should be given to the following companies to the Amaunt stated:-

Pronounced Development During Mr. Adamson's long period of service there was constant and pro- nounced development in the British India services to and round India. The regular lines of sailings increased, and the steamers added to the fleet advanced in size and speed and in accommodation

This, of course, was representative of what obtained in many other shipping services.

Under such conditions generally, and with a growing desire locally for better opportunities of mutual help and intercourse, several superinten- dent engineers at the Royal Albert Dock, and others associated with marine engineering industries, in the autumn of 1988 formed's committee to consider and further the pro- Position best of founding a society for the of marine engineers, and for their bearing on the work and main- of Ailsa, tenance of eteamships. If it is not possible to reduce the costs with, a rapid modernisation of ships, the report continues, the way to Economy lies in the simplification of services, the elimination of double taxalion, at present under the con sideration of the League of Nations, and the limitation of taxation by the Italian Government.

Linke With Shipping Born near Falkirk, Stirlingshire, on January 8, 1850, and with family traditions so linked with shipping and the sea, it was but natural that young James Adamson should follow a call- ing concerned with abipbuilding and marine engineering, although his early schooling at Falkirk and Allos, and later at Dollar Academy, where he was 8 pupil from 1862 to 1866, and later still at Glasgow University, was of a character so liberal and varied as might have suggested many other callings.

His apprenticeship engineering was begun in 1866, when he served first for twelve months with a millwright engineer at Falkirk, and subsequently for four years with the engineering firm of Forrest and Bart, Glasgow.

Removed To London Removing to London in 1876, he entered the drawing office of Messrs. J. and W. Dudgon, shipbuilders and engineers, Millwall, and after a time resolved on Bequiring some sea experience, and went on an extended voyaga in the four-masted steamer "Sumatra" to the Straits Settlements, China and Japan, in the latter country paying a visit to the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo. To the foregoing all too inadequate accourt of Mr. Adamson's work in the interests of the marine engineering profession sentence or two should be added as to his well-known sympathy with and participation in religious and philanthropic work, especially 03 behalf of the young, While in Glas- gow he was closely identified with the Foundry Boys' Religious Society, and devoted his Sabbaths and many of his evenings to ameliorative work in the poorer districts of the city. Embued as he is with the altruistic spirit little wonder need be felt that he inspires the regard of young and old; may he long be spared to witness the fruits of his career.
