Attempt Long Flight

Lilli Lehmann, one of the most powerful operatic magnets on two continents during the late 19th century, passed away at her home in Berlin, at the age of 81. Madame Lehmann was famous for creating the particularly difficult role of "Norma" in the well-known opera of that name. She is shown here with Walter Kirchoff, famous German tenor, in a visit which he made to her home a few years ago.

With a death toll of 124 lives, the investigations into the Cleve -land Clinic Hospital fire show that the explosion was caused by over- heating, of X-ray films stored in the room shown above. Modern safe- guarding apparatus, constructed to function when exposed to heat, failed to act, allowing the gas let off by the burning films to spread through the hospital. No evidencë of criminal negligence was found.

A piece of broken steam pipe jammed in the fire door of the Xray film room at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital allowed the poison gases to escape which killed over 125 persons and was expected to take an even heavier foll of those who were exposed. The picture above shows anxious relatives crowded at the entrance of the Cleveland morgue to help to identify bodies of friends and relatives.
