The newspaper asserts that credentials for Cardinal Gasparri, Papal secretary of state, authoris- ing him to guide the exchange of ratifications have been prepared in anticipation of the ceremony..

It now appears that plans the Pope to leave the Vatican June 6 have been abandoned. It is likely that the Holy Father will! decide to leave the Vatican for the first time on June 16 when the beatification of Father de la Beire occurs at St. Peter's church.

Reports also were current to-day that King Vietor Emmanuel of Italy and his Queen soon will pay a visit to the Tope. It will be the first such visit since 1871 when the

ROYAL ACADEMY

IRISH ARTIST'S WEIRD "PROBLEM" PICTURE.

London, May 3. The many celebrities who attend- ed the private view at the Royal

Academy found little that

was

bizarre among the 2,000 exhibits. The seekers after "problem" - plc- tures singled out "Night's Candles are Burning Out" an oli painting by an Irish artist, Mr. John Keating, featuring a dilapidated skeleton on the gallows, with a clergyman, and soldier and peasants around, an ugly dam across a beautiful

river.

.

It is suggested that the picture is intended to be a satirical com mentary on the Germans carrying out the Shannon power scheme.

There is a good show of portraits, six of which are of Royalties. They include a painting of the King by Captain Oswald Birley, M.C. Hi Majesty is depicted wearing an or dinary dark suit. The canvas is destined for the National Museum of Wales.

The democratic element is repre- senfad by an October landscape by Mr. Herbert Rollett, a Grimsby grocer, and two efforts by a -17- year-old East Tud youth, Sylvain Kluska, who pts housetops from his window at ethnal Green
